Article: Matusalem Gran Reserva Solera 23 Blender
Country: Dominican Republic
Producer: Matusalem
Age: Matured up to 23 years in the Solera system.
Alcohol: 40%
Colour: A rich, golden colour comparable to those found in the world´s best oak -barrel aged spirits. Its clear, brilliant red and amber tones come from the Solera system of blending young and mature rums in oak casks.
Flavour: Gran Reserva imparts a keen sense of its grace through its aroma of sweet vanilla, molasses, caramel and plums. This lavish offering results in a mellow, rich subtle and exquisitely refined rum.
Taste: A delicate taste, gentle, with an exceptional bouquet and delicate flavours of vanilla, molasses and caramel. Its complex palate generates barely any heart. The satiny texture is that of a unique super-premium rum.
Finish: It´s dry, toasty flavours take centre stage before slowly ebbing away in a long lasting finish.
Drink recommendation: This Cuban elixir can be enjoyed straight, or on the rocks.

This masterly rum is based on a secret family formula, Matusalem Gran Reserva has deserved the reputation, to be the Cognac of the rums. Its clear seasoning, and his refined taste has captured the culture and the Spirit of Cuba.

1872 the "Matusalem & Company" was founded.

The Solera - method of MATUSALEM needs several rows of barrels made of American oak stacked about each other. The oldest barrel row on the ground is called Solera ("the one who lies on the ground"). The rum intended for the sale is always taken from the bottom barrel row.
However, only a third of the contents at most is taken from every barrel. The taken quantity is refilled from the barrel row about this. In turn this second row is refilled about this from third row. This principle continues up to the topmost row. The taken quantity there is replaced with young rum now. This way the young rum walks through the system from above to below and is united continuously with the older years. The longer this Blending lasts, the more full of character the result gets. This effortful principle awards Matusalem rum its distinctiveness and guaranteed simultaneously the same top quality remaining about many years.
