Origin and Terrain
The grapes are from the vineyards ‘Lage Gottschelle' at the lower base of the Göttweiger mountain. The origin of the name ‘Gottschelle' is not fully documented but is most likely derived from an alpine dialect word ‘Goetschen' which describes the imposing ridge of a mountain. The first time this unique region was documented was in 1341 to describe its wine making potential. The vines for this particular wine are over 50 years old and are still producing very characteristic Veltliner. In addition, the heavy clay soil with its underlying layer of gravel is supporting the development of this grape.
Only the best grapes were harvested by the end of October for this ‘Grüner Veltliner Gottschelle'. These fully matured, flavour intense grapes were rushed from the vineyard to the winepress to ensure minimal exposure to the elements. The steel barrel fermentation was completed in a temperature controlled environment. By the middle of January the wine was separated and after a short rest on lees deposits carefully bottled.
