Country: Scotland
Region: Highlands / Speyside
Whisk(e)y type: Scotch Single Malt
Distillery: Linkwood
Bottler: Original
Age: 37 Years
Distilled: 1978
Bottled: 2016
Barrel: Refilled barrels (hogsheads) made of American oak and refilled barrels (butts) made of European oak.
Alcohol: 50.3%
Colour: Firm canary yellow, ancient polished brass
Flavour: Mellow, needs a little time to open; then slow unfolding of delicate fresh fruit notes, sweet pure fruit salad from honeydew melon, grapes, mandarin peel, apple and pear over a base from a crumbly butter toffee. Gradually intensive and more firmly as fruit salad with syrup; perhaps creamy with marzipan, vanilla and a trace liquorice. Then gracefully beguiling and intoxicating, with notes of a white rose over tender cream brûlée. Water unlocks his flavour without changing it. More butter toffee; then smelling as an old-fashioned fruit shop in summer.
Taste: Medium body. Enticing at the palate, at first generous soft texture; fruitily sweet and altogether sugarily, then warming and sharp with baked apple in the middle of the palate. Quick unfolding of an appetising dryness with black tea and cabbage cough drops, balanced by rum & raisin ice cream, lime and waxyvanilla. Finally notes of ginger, cloves and a pinch salt. With water the apple is caramelized easily and is accompanied by a sugar-sweet vanilla sponge.
Finish: Long lasting and warming with a peppery note. Oak emphatic and herbal with dry wrapping tannins and a clean, aromatic finish; in the aftertaste spices togeher with milk chocolate and sharpened hardwood. With water more dryly but nevertheless warming; light with nuances of cedar wood, waxy and late softer and longer tannins.
