Although schnapps was illegally distilled already in the 17th century, today's distillery arose only at the end of the fifties, built by two native landowners with support of the Scottish & Newcastle Breweries Ltd.
The water is from Loch a 'Bahile-Mhargaidh, 300 m above Craighouse, the only village on the little Hebrides island. It is dark of the peat but the Jura Whisky distilled out of this is surprisingly light, not to compare with the Malts of the neighboring island Islay.
The first Jura Malts came onto the market in 1974.
